In the past few years, consumers have been concerned about the environment more than before. These days, terms like “organic”, “sustainable” and “renewable” are often used and we can even say that they dominate today’s lexicon. However, consumers tend to buy faux fur coats instead of a natural fur coat. When it comes to fur, the rush to faux is especially concerning.

Obviously, it’s every designer’s choice what type of fur wants to use and the customers are free to choose whatever they desire because there are beautiful models in both situations. We respect everyone’s right to their own opinion and the ones who buy and wear faux fur don’t have to be disparaged.

But what about all that eco-friendly mood? Where are the people who support the protection of the environment now? Ecology is not just a trend, it is a real issue that must be dealt with responsibility. Maybe you don’t know yet, but the difference between a natural fur coat and a faux fur coat is huge: you really have to take into consideration the impact on the environment from the production, processing and their disposal. The nylon, acrylic and polyester in faux fur are manufactured from non-renewable petroleum and these synthetic fibres take a really long time to break down. And when they do break down, scientists find they are actually poisoning our marine life.

First of all, you must know that a natural fur coat is durable, reusable and recyclable. Secondly, if you don’t buy real fur coats just because you want to protect the animals, then find out that there are lots of local, national and international regulations which must be followed by the fur industry that is allowed to make use of available resources without depleting wildlife species or the environment.

In case you wish to understand the difference between a luxury fur coat and an ordinary or a faux fur coat, we are going to tell you only one thing: farmers strive to raise the animals in such ways they can have rich, lustrous and healthy furs. Good nutrition, comfortable housing and prompt veterinary care are the secrets of an absolutely gorgeous fur. More than this, faux fur coats are mass-produced and the real fur coats are hand made, being the result of the talented and really passionate craftsmen. The amount of energy and fossil fuel required for fabrication is relatively low when compared to large, automated factories.

Also, we have to take into consideration that fur trade supports local indigenous populations contributing to environmental conservation. Without their ability to trap or hunt, these indigenous people would be forced to turn to other activities for their living, opening up their territories to mining, oil drilling or other interests.

Anyway, with all the fantastic real fur coats rocking the stores and the runways for fall/ winter 2017-2018, the question is simple: why would we fake them?
